Q: My computer failed SOLAR's test. How do I fix it?A:
If problems persist, here is an explanation of the Computer Compatibility Test and how to manually fix problems so that SOLAR works on your computer:
When you run SOLAR's Quick Computer Compatibility Test, a diagnostic window will appear on the upper left of your computer screen. There will be a list of the items tested with those items that did not pass appearing in orange font. Following the list, there will be a brief explanation as to why a particular item failed the test:
*********************************
Platform: WinXP Browser: IE Version: 6

Your browser is blocking pop-up windows.
Your browser did not pass the SIB Browser Environment Test.

In the sample above, six items were tested. One failed the test. Here is a discription of each item, and how to fix your computer so that it passes the test. If the following information does not help you, please contact us for additional support.
Platform
A platform describes some sort of framework, either in hardware or software, which allows software to run. Your computer most likely has a Microsoft Windows or Macintosh (MAC) platform. In order to successfully run SOLAR, we suggest the following platform versions:
Windows 98 and above
MAC OS 9 (Released 1999) and above
Browser
A web browser is a software application, that enables a user to display and interact with documents on the internet. Your computer most likely has Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) or Netscape. You will find the most success working on the internet if you download the latest version of web browser that your platform (see above) will support. Fortunately these downloads are free. Follow these URLs to download the latest version of the web browser you are using:
Javascript
JavaScript is a programming language best known for its use in websites. It enables the user to interact with web pages to perform tasks such as opening a new window and changing images as the mouse cursor moves over. SOLAR uses client-side JavaScript technology to create its powerful dynamic web applications. JavaScript technology is included in your web browser program, so you should not need to take any action to enable its use on your computer.
Cookies and Pop-Up Windows
Here is the most likely source of problems you may encounter completing an on-line application in SOLAR. Fortunately the fix is not difficult.
Most problems submitting applications are due to the fact that the internet application process uses pop-up windows. The application, the supplemental questions, and the EEOC form are all pop-up windows. Very useful, good pop-up windows. However, there are also evil pop-up windows on the internet--like spyware, and viruses. Therefore, computers have firewalls to block the evil pop-up windows. If these firewalls are set too high, they also block ODOT's good pop-up windows, and your application won't work.
The solution: Tell your computer to let ODOT's good pop-up windows through its firewall. Here's how:
Computer Firewall
From the Start menu in your computer, go to:
- Settings
- Control Panel
- Security (Based on your version of windows the path and labels may be different)
- Locate a window that allows you to enter web addresses of individual sites you allow past your firewall
- Enter https://www.odotjobs.com
IP Provider Firewall
Contact your IP Provider and have them enter https://www.odotjobs.com as an exception.
Cookies: Set your browser to accept ODOT's good cookies
Cookies are "instructions" or "maps" placed on your computer to allow various internet communication processes. Some computers are set to block cookies (some cookies contain spyware, viruses...). The key: Set your computer to accept SOLAR's good cookies.
- Minimize all windows
- Right click on Internet Explorer icon (The one on your desktop--not the bottom of the screen.)
- Click Properties
- Click Privacy tab
- Set the "slider" to just below the medium point
- Click Edit
- Enter https://www.odotjobs.com in the web address box
- Click Allow
- Click Okay
- You're Done! Refresh SOLAR Website, then retry your original task.
Instantly Bypass any Pop-up Blocker on an Individual Basis
- Press the control key while clicking on the pop-up action button (i.e. the "Continue" or "Submit" button).
- This will solve your pop-up blocker problems on SOLAR or anywhere else on the internet.
